A nurse’s lack of compassion towards an ailing patient who suffered an anxiety attack is further proof of the poor treatment Black folks often receive when they go to the hospital, the patient’s father argued.

On Tuesday, Donald Bardell shared Facebook video of his son stretched out on a gurney in the emergency room at El Camino Los Gatos hospital after the teen suffered an apparent panic attack. Bardell, who resides in California, tells the nurse his son vomited and was “… going in and out of conscious” during the episode. The nurse, who is white, insisted the boy was just fine, however.

“He’s completely awake and alert right now,” she says. “And he’s breathing just fine.”

“He is, but if he leaves this hospital, he’s going to have another anxiety attack just like that one because he’s in the same shape that he was in when he came in,” Bardell argued.

Seconds later, the nurse is seen trying to jerk the young man up by his arm after he claims he’s unable to sit up on his own. The teen also complains that he’s in a great deal of pain.

“Sir, you are the least sick of all the people who are here who are dying,” the nurse barks, growing more and more agitated. She continues tugging at the teen’s arm, demanding that he sit up.

“Don’t tell me you can’t move,” she says. “Sit up! Sit up!”

Though he’s able to pick his head up and move his arms, the young man insists he cannot sit up all the way and says he’s having trouble inhaling. The nurse scoffs at him, dismissing his claims.

“Wow, you must be dead then,” she says sarcastically. “Are you dead, sir? … This is ridiculous.”

The nurse then accuses the teen of “changing f—–g his story” about having a panic attack and expresses skepticism about the pain he claims he’s in. That’s when Bardell explains his son was in pain the last time he came in for a panic attack and that nurses gave him some fluids and “a pill.”

“So you want some narcotics?” the nurse replies.

The situation only escalated from there to the point where the nurse declares how “pissed off” she is at the two men.

“Put an IV in him, give him a liter of fluid and get him outta here,” she says of the patient.

The video, which has been viewed more than 600,000 times, has sparked outrage among users. Critics argued however, that although the nurse’s behavior was vile, the incident had little to do with race.

Bardell disagreed, however, writing, “This is how they treat black people in Los Gatos emergency room. SMH Everyone share this video. For the record this is my son.”
